Classroom clusters are connected on two levels to outside learning spaces at the building’s back that boast views of Mount Rainier’s snow covered peaks. The stairs’ landings act as seating areas.

In the process of developing a form for the 30,000 square foot, 18 classroom building and keeping within the budget we created a pair of two story structures that meet at the prow of the site. A long, winding classroom building buffers the social spaces from Silverlake Boulevard and a shorter building containing all the administrative offices and media rooms anchors the primary pedestrian entrance. Along the site’s southern edge, a long building with a snake-like plan, houses classrooms. To the north side is a smaller building devoted primarily to administrative function. Continuous corrugated metal panels clad the buildings’ concrete block bearing walls. On the primary street elevations, the panels cover the windows but are perforated to limit penetration of street sounds and provide sun control, but allow views out. These facades are painted yellow and grey in a pattern that uses more yellow where the walls push outward and less where they are concave, to emphasize their curves. In some places the south facade pulls away from the plot line, providing spaces for landscaping.

The new 27,800 square foot building champions the school’s mission and culture of learning and social awareness through spaces suffused with natural light, promoting calm, creativity, and collective responsibility. The foundations required complicated friction piles to anchor the building to keep it from floating, and complete waterproofing of the lower floors. The cellar slab was raised to be just above the water table, making the first floor 3 feet above the sidewalk. Spaces for daily school-wide gatherings, as well as public special events, are concentrated in the lower floors. The entry lobby, dining room, multipurpose gymnasium and backyard are all linked by light-filled stairs and gentle ramps.
